Brief Report of the Event:

  • The Department of Nursing Education, along with the I-year postgraduates, Yenepoya Nursing College, Mangaluru, organized a state-level workshop titled "Hacking the heart: A workshop on attitude development among Gen Z students" on 24.05.2025 at the EMD auditorium, near ACTS YEN, 8th floor, Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte. A total of 100 delegates from various districts of Karnataka attended the Workshop. For the e-poster competition 10 scientific and 30 thematic poster were received from the delegates. KSNC has awarded 8 credit points for the workshop
  • After registration & pretest, the first session started at 9.00 am on the topic "Affective domain, where learning comes alive" by Dr. Sandra Sunitha Lobo, Professor and the Head of the Department of Psychology at School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru highlighted all the aspects of affective learning domains with the examples of real-life experiences. The session was chaired by Dr. Anju Ullas, Associate Professor Stage I of YNC, and moderated by Ms.Vinusahana, a first-year PG student, YNC.
  • After the tea break, the inaugural program started at 10.20 am with an invocation by Ms. Asiya Banu, a first-year PG student. Dr. Priya Reshma Aranha, organizing chairperson, welcomed the gathering. The conference was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by dignitaries. The chief guest Dr. Anice George, Professor & Head, Research & Collaborations, Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal, addressed the gathering and emphasized that it is essential to reprogram the attitude of students to make them more empathetic and compassionate healthcare providers. She also emphasized that present teachers need to be prepared to handle tech-savvy Gen Z students. The guest of honour, Dr. Aswini Dutt R, Dean Academics, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), addressed the gathering on the importance of developing the right attitude among students of the healthcare profession. Dr. Leena KC, Principal, Yenepoya Nursing College, presided over the function. Mrs. Sharin Neetal D'Souza, Organizing Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks.

The second session on "Navigating Bloom's affective domain" started at 11.30 am by Dr. Poonam R Naik, Department of Community Medicine,Yenepoya Medical College, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University). She highlighted the levels of the affective domain in detail with examples and conducted a group activity on how to implement them innovatively. The session was chaired by Mrs. Nithyashree BV, Assistant Professor, Stage II, YNC and moderated by Ms. Ankitha V, first-year PG student, YNC.
  • The third session, "Affective domain tools and techniques" started at l2:30pm by Dr. Grrishma B, Professor, Department of Physiology, AJ Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre, Mangalore, Karnataka, India, who introduced various tools and techniques to assess the affective domain and demonstrated among delegates, how to use it effectively. The session was chaired by Mrs. Sharin Neetal Dsouza, Associate Professor Stage I, YNC and moderated by Ms. Sneha, a first-year PG student, YNC.
  • The lunch break was given at l.40 pm. After lunch, the fourth session was stated at 2.30 pm on "Foster emotional intelligence through the affective domain" by Dr. Vasudha Kulkarni, Professor and HOD, Department of Anatomy, Member Secretary, Institutional Ethical Committee, Convener, Medical education Unit, Postgraduate Coordinator, Akash Centre for Advanced Simulation, Akash Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre. She threw light on emotional intelligence, which involves developing learners' attitudes, emotions, values, and interpersonal skills. The session was chaired by Ms. Sabeena MTP, Faculty, Father Muller College of Nursing, Mangaluru and moderated by Ms.Ningthoujam Leishana Chanu, a first-year PG student, YNC
  • The closing ceremony was arranged at 3.30 pm, where a post-test was conducted, and delegates' feedback was obtained. E poster competition winners were awarded with prizes. Certificates were distributed to the delegates. The workshop ended at 4.00 pm with high tea

Outcome of the event

  • The workshop enhanced the understanding of the affective domain in education, with a focus on emotional intelligence, Bloom's taxonomy, and practical tools/techniques. The workshop was structured to build both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for nursing professionals involved in teaching and curriculum development. The mean posttest score increased to 8.65 from 5.37 in the pretest.
