Brief report of the event:

  • The Department of Mental Health Nursing, in collaboration with Arivu Early Intervention Center, organized a one-day program on 15th April 2025 to observe World Autism Day at the Arivu Centre, Shaktinagar, Mangaluru, on theme "The Role of Sensory-Based Interventions in Autism Care: A Step Toward Inclusion". The program began with a prayer by students from Arivu Center, followed by inviting guests on stage and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Mrs. Poornima Bhat delivered the inaugural address, followed by guest addresses by Mrs. Soumya Puthra. Psychologist, YENCOURAGE Psychiatric Rehabilitation Unit, Kankanady. Dr. Binsha, HOD, Department of Mental Health Nursing, YNC. Sheetal Ullal, President, children pareants committee, KMC.Kala Deepak, Social worker, Kankanady and Harini Shetty, President of Lion club, Kankanady.
  • A Parent Guidance Book authorized by Dr. Poornima Bhat was released during the event. The main session was conducted by Mrs. Soumya Puthran. She shared valuable insights on the importance, techniques, and impact of sensory-based interventions in managing autism spectrum disorder. Additionally, she distributed an information sheet to all participants, providing concise guidance and take-home points related to the topic.
  • Following the educational session, nursing students and arivu special children presented cultural performances, contributing to an inclusive and engaging atmosphere. The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Ms. Renita Flavia Monteiro, Assistant professor - II, Mental Health Nursing Department, acknowledging the contributions of all guests, organizers, and participants.

Outcome of the event

  • Program was a highly successful in effectively creating awareness, promoting understanding and encouraging community engagement. A diverse audience comprising parents, teachers, students and professionals participated, fostering a collaborative learning. The following positive outcomes were identified
  • The overall effectiveness of the program was rated as excellent by 78.57% of participants
  • 57.14% of the participants found the topic highly relevant program
  • 92.86% rated content as highly informative
  • 100% participants reported that the program was useful and helped them to gain a knowledge
